EECP: A Nonsurgical Heart Blockage Treatment
Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) is a non-invasive treatment given to lower the frequency and intensity of angina episodes. Angina symptoms include chest pain due to contraction or pressure, burning sensation, or fullness. The chest pain can also extend to the shoulders, arms, and lower abdomen. In the EECP Therapy or treatment, three pairs of external cuffs are applied on the lower abdomen, upper legs, and buttocks. The cuffs can inflate and deflate in synchronization with the heartbeat, resulting in increased blood flow to the heart.
Principle of EECP treatment
The treatment works for increasing blood flow to the heart, increasing oxygen supply to its deficient parts, eventually helping the heart to function better.
Procedure
STEP 1: The patient is laid down on a padded table in the treatment room
STEP 2: Electrodes are applied to the chest skin and connected through an electrocardiograph (ECG) machine
STEP 3: A set of cuffs are wrapped around the calves, thighs, and buttocks. As the cuffs inflate and deflate, the patient experiences limited compression and relaxation around the target parts.
Who is Eligible for the Treatment?
Patients who had CABG that is Coronary Artery Bypass and had stents inserted in the coronary vessels to deal with recurring angina problems.
Patients who continue to experience recurring angina without any stents or CAGB process.
Who are not Eligible for Treatment?
Patients who have the following complications should not go for this treatment:
Contingental heart disease
Valvular Disease
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Inflated or Enlarged Heart
Hemorrhage
Blood clots in some parts of the body
PVD or Peripheral Arterial Disease is better known as peripheral vascular disease
High blood pressure
Heart rate greater than 120 beats per minute
